Kids and dogs often wind each other up to a frenzied pitch. But dogs need to have quality rest time just as much as quality playtime.
A dog needs somewhere in the home where she can go and not be bothered, such as a crate or dog bed. Kids must be taught that they can’t violate that zone. If they want to interact with the dog, they should call the dog to them, giving the dog a choice. If she chooses not to come, they have to accept that.
Kids and dogs also need quiet time together, and this means teaching kids to pet the dog with slow, gentle stokes on the shoulders, back and chest. Reading stories as a family, including the dog, is a great way to have quiet time together. The kids love it and so does the dog!
